We are proud to announce that we now have a Physician Associate on board, which we believe will only our ability to provide the highest quality of care our community.
What is a Physician Associate? Physician Associates (PA's) are medical providers who work as a part of the medical team. PA's are trained under the medical model-- the model that trains doctors, as opposed to the nursing model that trains nurses and nurse practitioners. They are hired to work as a mid-level health care provider, under the doctor's supervision. They have existed in the U.S. since the mid 1960's during a time of shortage in primary care physicians in the US. The profession was created in order to improve access to health care for a growing and aging population. They are currently expanded into countries like Australia, UK, Netherlands, Canada and New Zealand. PA's can obtain medical histories, perform examinations and procedures, diagnose illness, prescribe medications, order and interpret tests, refer patients to specialists and assist in surgeries. Since PA's are in the early stages of registration in New Zealand, there are limitation to their scope of practice. The PA's work here at Dinsdale Medical Centre is under the supervision of Dr. Tam.
